I loved this 🫶🏻 I honestly can’t imagine writing what I don’t like/cant relate to. I’ve tried and it just doesn’t come out, or it comes out a total mess. She sounds like a formidable woman!

Thank you so much! 🤍

Me neither. I feel almost like she was coerced into it. Part of me wants to be upset on her behalf because it wasn’t really what she wanted to do.

We got a beautiful classic but at her expense and it does seem unfair

Well, like you said, she found ways t to I reframe her childhood to see it through kinder eyes. I think that that’s an important thing for anyone to learn. Even though it was mandated, I think she became a healthier person because of it.

Definitely! Writing is so good for that purpose - we can take our darkest memories and make them into something lovely! I know she’ll have healed a lot through it!

Thank you for offering such a wonderful glimpse into her personal life. Interestingly, I read your article with the same sense of in-betweenness—wondering whether the publisher and her father truly did what was best for her. Just as we can’t know what might have happened if she had focused on her adult dark fiction writing, we can’t be certain about this either. Thank you for prompting such delicate introspections on the life of one of the greatest female novelists.

So interesting, Mariella! I must admit, I never was drawn to classics 'like' Little Women, as my mom reared me more on darker-themed fiction, but it's true, the March sisters are such a part of our culture, I know their personalities and story as if Alcott's story had been a part of my childhood!

Isn’t that the truth! Some classics just are a part of our childhood, even if we might not reach for them now, and the characters are just as real as any friend we might have known then. Thank you for the comment!

I loved reading this! I’ve always loved Little Women and it honestly makes sense to me that the sometimes idyllic nature of the scenes would come from someone imagining what she never got to experience. The character of Jo had a huge influence on me and it’s definitely now on my daughter’s bookshelf. ❤️
