I LOVED "The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society." I too was put off by the format but once I dove in I couldn't put it down. Perhaps I should no longer say I dislike epistolary novel because I just finished "The Correspondent" too and found it so poignant.
How lovely this is. I think this post has chosen me to read it right now too😊. I often feel I have no one to discuss books with and I don't know any writers locally. I crave this kind of connection. A sort of thank god soneone gets me even though I choose to be alone feeling. When I did my English Lit and Creative Writing degree I did it with OU so again missed out. Joining Substack the other week has gone a long way in filling this void. I come across writing like this that makes me feel understood and inspires my natural hunger for discovering books and writers which come to me like a top secret. Thank you🙏📚

I’ve seen that book floating around! Now I’m going to have to check it out! Thanks for commenting!
I totally agree, I used to think of it as, I am not grown up enough for the book yet. But I love thinking
that the the book chooses you <3
The book absolutely does choose the reader. ❤️ The book knows when we are ready for its message!
I felt that so often- sometimes you walk into a bookshop and there’s the book for you. It’s quite surprising and exciting!
What an honor to be “chosen” by a book!

Love this book...and have read it several times. And out loud, recording it for my sleepless friend.
I took have never found 'my' book club, though would love to experience this one.
PS...the film is fab too, with end-credit talkover to die for 💙
I have a used copy that has sat on my shelf, untouched, for years. Maybe it’s time to reach for it again and see if it will choose me now!
That is an effusive recommendation for a book that hadn’t really grabbed my attention until now. I should revisit that
What a beautiful read! I’ll definitely add this one to my reading list
Thank you for posting this lovely piece, Mariella. I was amazed to read your story about The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society because I had a similar experience with exactly the same book in 2018. I wrote about it on my blog: https://bookjotter.com/2019/03/05/thoughts-on-the-guernsey-literary-and-potato-peel-pie-society/
It must be one of those books that finds readers when most needed. Bizarre but really rather wonderful!
