Fascinating! I look forward to the next installment. I know little of Julia Ward Howe and am curious about what controversy swirls about her now?

Well, most of it is in interpreting her various papers in such a way as to color her husband as some sort of abuser, saying she wrote behind his back. He may not have been always easy to get along with, to be sure, but I’m convinced their marriage was as happy as two great power-houses could be. There is also some accusation of severe racism in her part, using cherry-picked evidence. She grew to a broader fellow-feeling in mid-life.

I see. I think this happens a lot when people today look at people from the past. They judge them unfairly. I am one of those willing to grant those who lived in a different time a little grace. Thank you.
