Long before Jane Marple made her appearance in 1927, other female detectives were gracing the pages of English and American mystery stories.
I had no idea there were so many female detective characters in this earlier era. Very interesting.
This is great! I've actually just been reading some Anna Katherine Green, will have to try some of these others
Wonderful round-up! Particularly interesting to learn about Judith Lee and her lip-reading skills!
Ooooh! Some new-to-me authors! Thank you for sharing!
Fascinating. I hadn’t heard of any of these detectives before, although I do remember the Scarlet Pimpernel books so I knew one of the authors.
Apart from that, I mostly know 19th century female detectives from more recent pastiche, such as Enola Holmes.
I love when they are "professional" lady detectives, separating them from the amateur who most likely own a bakery while solving crimes on the side.
